Pumpkin estimations

Today we estimated the size of our great pumpkin, the diameter, using yarn. All of us came up too short and too long in our estimations. However, There were a few that were pretty close, within a couple inches! We also estimated the number of seeds in our great big pumpkin. The fun part was hallowing out the pumpkin, separating the seeds from the goop and counting the 680 seeds! We had one expert estimator that estimated 666. Wow!
Our Star of the Week...

Did you know that Katie likes to eat pancakes with syrup and snow? Did you also know that Katie loves to go fishing with her dad? Katie has been to Lego Land and Disney too.
Thank you, Katie, for sharing with us today.

Today we talked about 'Good Fit' books. Similar to shoes every book has to fit. Shoes reflect our interests, have a purpose, and fit our feet! The books we chose must be the same, chosen to reflect what we like, for what purpose we are reading it, and fit our reading comfort / skill. Is it too easy? too hard? Today I brought in a collection of shoes with a range of purposes and even one of Mr. Robeano's to explain. I also chose a 'poor fit' magazine to show my students that even though I am a good reader, Sports Illustrated magazine is not a good fit. You should have seen their face when I read an article, but understood nothing! Although, this magazine was a perfect fit for Mrs. Paulson. Who knew there was so much to baseball?
Happy Birthday, Ferial!

Today students were introduced to the line of symmetry and asked to create a symmetrical design using pattern blocks. This was the third activity we have done using pattern blocks. Ask you child to name all the shapes we used.
Happy Birthday Clara!

KD Architects

Today we read How A House A Built by Gail Gibbons and learned the many steps that are taken by many workers to build a house. We learned new vocabulary related to its construction including, studs, foundation, plumbing, septic tank, insulation and architect among many more. Later we did our own blue print plans to design our own wood framed houses. We worked in our own or with a partner to design a plan that accounted for the many features of a house.
